MEET THE PRESENTERS
The Marriage Menders
Derrick and Sonya McCollum are the founders of The Marriage Menders, LLC & are Licensed Marriage & Family Counselors, practicing together for 21 years. Their practice consists of providing office, telephonic and video conferencing sessions to individuals and couples throughout the United States & abroad. Within their ministry, Derrick & Sonya often find themselves praying and interceding for many couples and individuals who are struggling in their relationships, in addition to encouraging singles, teaching and supporting parents and uplifting the divorced, while strengthening families on a whole.
Derrick and Sonya are Mental Health Professionals who teach the importance of mental wellness within their practice and the connection this has to having healthy relationships within our families and our community. They are also the authors of Unlocking The Mysteries of Marriage a published book which they wrote to help married couples and singles understand the plan that God truly has for His children and to share in a very transparent way how through their many marital challenges they became stronger as individuals and as a married couple.
They have been married for 23 years and have four children, Danielle, Sian, Sye and Little Derrick II. Most importantly, they have a deep desire for serving the Lord and desire to go wherever He calls to share how to foster healthy relationships with each other, using Christ as their example.
Edward & Debbie Smith
Edward and Debbie Smith give new meaning to the term “Power Couple” with a foundation built on their belief in God; they enthusiastically embrace their mission to help others reach their full potential in life. Edward and Debbie are business partners, friends and lovers. Together they are raising three children while building two businesses, leading out in Couples’ Ministry in their church, and growing as Relationship Educators, Life Navigators.
Edward and Debbie are authors of two books, “The 5 Star Marriage. The 5 Star Husband/Wife.” Shortly after the books were placed on Amazon, The 5 Star Husband/Wife climbed to the fourth Position, placing The Smiths on the Amazon best seller list.
THE SMITHS understand the devastating effect of divorce from their personal experiences. Because of this, they are determined to become champions for successful marriages! They understand that strong marriages lead to strong children and families, which lead to strong churches, which lead to strong communities.
THE SMITHS enjoy doing all things together. They often travel from state to state speaking to others about entrepreneurship and business ownership. They both have a passion for families and enjoy facilitating workshops and retreats for couples and families. As life Navigators, they are committed to helping others aim higher and reach further. THE SMITHS have a big vision for the future. It is a vision that involves helping as many people as they can develop a progressive mindset so they can live life to the fullest potential. It is a vision they fully plan on realizing because ALL things are possible with God!
Dr. Robert L. Davis and
Dr. Denise Davis
Dr. Robert Davis is a Family Life Specialist with over 20 years of experience as a Senior Pastor, Family Life Educator, Hospice Chaplain, and Bereavement Coordinator. He is trained and skilled in the critical aspects of family life and family functioning. He has inspired congregations and organizations across America and around the world to better understand how to function as a healthy family.
During Dr. Davis’ pastoral tenure he has been deeply involved with community policing and social justice efforts. While in Baton Rouge, LA he established the Berean Wellness and Community Support Center, which served as a Nurse Practitioner operated clinic providing medical treatment for underserved and uninsured individuals. Dr. Davis currently resides in Denver, CO where he has served on several community-based law enforcement committees of the Denver Safety Department focusing on police oversight, use of force policy reforms, data collection initiatives, and working with Denver’s District Attorney. Currently Dr. Davis serves as the Executive Director of Seasoned with Grace Unboxed which is a family life education and enrichment organization.
Dr. Denise Davis has been a speech therapist for 15 years. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Andrews University, a Master’s degree in Speech- Language Pathology from Southern University and A&M College and, Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.
Dr. Davis is the owner and director of Hopewell Therapy, LLC, where she serves populations ranging from infants to adults. She has served in various settings including schools, daycares, early intervention, medically fragile daycare, and home health (adults and children). She provides a range of services in both populations including those affected by articulation and phonological impairments, voice, swallow disorders, Autism spectrum, fluency disorders, and language and cognition.
Dr. Davis serves as Director of Research and Planning for Seasoned With Grace gathering and quantifying the methods and outcomes from all SWG programs and curriculums. She facilitates the necessary research and disseminate final results to grant providers and potential academic and health studies.
Dr. Dwayne L. Buckingham
Dr. Dwayne L. Buckingham is the President and Chief Executive Officer of R.E.A.L. Horizons Consulting Solutions, LLC, founder of the You Deserve More women’s empowerment movement and President of the Empathy and Resilience Center, a nonprofit 501 (c) (3).
As a highly acclaimed international clinical psychotherapist, decorated veteran, relationship expert, resilience guru, author, film producer, coach and corporate consultant with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Buckingham has helped over 30,000 individuals, couples, groups, and families worldwide overcome adversity, hardship and emotional distress by providing superb psychological assessments, mental health treatment and psycho-educational training. In recognition of his expertise, he has been featured on NBC, ABC, Fox 2 News, ESSENCE, The CW 11, The Daily Drum, Huffington Post, and numerous other media outlets.
In addition to being a highly acclaimed international clinical psychotherapist, Dr. Buckingham is also a successful entrepreneur. In 2017 he received the distinct destination of DMV Entrepreneur of the Year from Wes Adams’ State’s Attorney Office, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Dr. Buckingham has provided keynote addresses, consulting services and training for numerous organizations including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, United States Public Health Services (USPHS), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Health Resource and Service Administration (HRSA), United States Air Force, First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Habitat for Humanity, St. John’s Baptist Church, The Bowman Francis Ministry, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
He holds a B.S.W. in Social Work from Jackson State University, a M.S.W in Clinical Social Work from Michigan State University, a Ph.D. in Human Services from Capella University and is Board Certified by the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work. He is also an active member of the National Association of Social Workers and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
When Dr. Buckingham isn’t empowering individuals and communities, he enjoys spending time with his family, working out and traveling.
Troy Levy is the proud Lead Pastor of the New Life SDA Church in Gaithersburg, MD. He’s also the founder of Levy Legacy Coaching which offers comprehensive financial coaching to couples no matter where they are along their financial journey.
Troy earned a Master of Divinity degree at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, is a Doctor of Ministry candidate (December 2019) in Urban Ministry with an emphasis in financial literacy at Andrews University, and has completed training as a financial coach & as a Prepare/ Enrich facilitator.
Troy and his wife Rachelle understand the constraints that money issues have on relationships as they had been in $100,000 in student loan debt. Debt frustrated and even embarrassed them. After getting out of debt, they’re now experiencing the elbow room to make life decisions, not based on financial constraints, but based on freedom. Troy created The BluePrint, a faith-based financial literacy curriculum specifically aimed at helping families of color build the life they want so that they can experience this same freedom.
Dr. David & Denise Defoe
Dr. David Defoe currently serves as the Relationship Ministries Director for the Allegheny East Conference, which includes Family Ministry, Men’s Ministry and Singles Ministry. He has a BA in English and Communications, a Masters of Divinity, Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology, a Doctor of Ministry in Family Ministries, and is in the writing phase of his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. He is a licensed clinical psychotherapist, entrepreneur, and counselor educator.
Denise Defoe is a hospice social worker, who received her bachelors in social work from Oakwood College, and her Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She has a background in aging and gerontology, and is passionate about working with seniors. She is the author of They Chose Me: An Adoption Story which outlines her journey as an adoptee.
David and Denise were married in 2008, and they have one daughter Dayna Imara. They reside in Laurel, Maryland.
