First Church Paterson Performs “The Rope and the Cross” Play

On April 26, 2025, the First Church in Paterson hosted a dramatic presentation of “The Rope and The Cross,” a renowned play by the late Jamaican playwright Easton Lee. Directed by the talented Vivien Morris Scarlett, this production brought fresh interpretations to this classic work.
Originally penned in 1979, the play uniquely reimagines the biblical figures of Jesus' time as modern-day men, delving into themes of social justice and equality that resonate deeply in today’s society. This performance aims to engage contemporary audiences while honoring Lee’s powerful storytelling. This enriching theatrical experience has undoubtedly sparked conversations about faith, redemption, and God’s unconditional love for humanity. Two precious souls were saved as a result of this powerful reenactment.
The play had a total of 25 cast members. The cast included new converts and regular members. Over 315 congregants were in attendance. The church’s platform was transformed into a theatrical stage. When asked to use one word to describe the play, one congregant described it as “exhilarating.”
The play depicted the timely message of hope, redemption and salvation for all age groups. The performance not only showcased the talents with the First S.D.A Church of Paterson, but also showcased the unique and creative medium to share the good news of Jesus' resurrection and the promise of His return.
