First Church-Paterson Launches Social Justice Convention

On April 12, 2025, the First Seventh-day Adventist Church of Paterson, New Jersey, made history with the launch of its inaugural Social Justice Convention, uniting faith leaders, civil servants, artists, and government officials from across northern New Jersey in a powerful call for justice through faith-driven action.

Under the leadership of Senior Pastor Donald C. Francis and Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Director, Nadege Allwaters, Esq., the convention underscored the church’s commitment to community engagement and advocacy.

Keynote speaker Elder Derrick Green — renowned social justice activist and former Senior Advisor to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy — delivered a compelling sermon based on the biblical account of the Hebrew boys, urging attendees to embrace moral courage and unwavering faith in confronting systemic injustice. In an interactive afternoon workshop, Green also explored the biblical foundations of social justice, inspiring participants to view advocacy as both a civic duty and sacred mission.

Among the distinguished guests were Paterson Council President Alex Mendez, Councilwoman Ruby Cotton, Kenyatta Stewart (Corporation Counsel for the City of Newark and Assembly Candidate), Rev. Alfred Steele (Seminary Baptist Church), Dr. Reverend Randall M. Lassiter (Calvary Baptist Church and State President of the New Jersey Convention of Progressive Baptists), and Dr. Sybil Finney (award-winning artist and cultural activist).

Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Director Nadege Allwaters, Esq., stated, “We must advocate for the rights, benefits, and interests of the marginalized and voiceless in our communities around us. We cannot be disciples of Christ and fail to advocate for the least among us when the moments and opportunities arise.” Her call to action reflected the heart of the event’s mission.

The Minds of the Lord Praise Dance Team and the Calvary Baptist Church Praise Team added inspiration through worship and performance, creating a vibrant, spirit-filled atmosphere.

Pastor Donald C. Francis reflected on the event’s success, stating, “The gospel of Christ is inherently social, aiming to heal and uplift all of God’s children, acknowledging their inherent dignity and rights. Our vision to engage and partner with community influencers to enhance humanity was successfully realized.”

The First Seventh-day Adventist Church of Paterson’s Social Justice Convention marked a significant milestone in its mission to merge spiritual growth with social responsibility, laying a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration and advocacy in the community.
