Methodist Pastor Sponsors Hagerstown Haitian Youth Trip
In a beautiful demonstration of God’s providence and the unity of His people, the Hagerstown Haitian Seventh-day Adventist Group witnessed what can only be described as a modern-day miracle: God provided exactly what was needed, right on time.
The Hagerstown Haitian SDA Group, a growing satellite congregation of the Horeb–Bethany–Hagerstown (HBH) Maryland District under God’s undershepherd, Pastor Dr. Brian Ladiny, was prayerfully preparing to send its Pathfinders, Adventurers, and parents for the first time to attend the 34th annual retreat of the Haitian Youth Federation at Pine Forge Academy in Pennsylvania. However, a significant challenge stood before them: the cost of transportation for nearly 31
participants.
As the group sought the Lord in prayer, God was already working behind the scenes. Rev. Jim, pastor of Bethel United Methodist Church in Smithsburg, Maryland, the very church that graciously hosts the Hagerstown Haitian congregation for worship, extended an extraordinary act of kindness. With a generous heart and a spirit of mission, he offered the church’s 15-passenger van free of charge for the trip.
More than simply lending the vehicle, Rev. Jim personally ensured that the van was fully serviced and ready for the journey. He even expressed his willingness to assist with driving, should the need arise. In his own words, Rev. Jim shared a powerful testimony: “The Seventh-day Adventists are good people. We have much in common, and historically, there are connections between our movements. This van was purchased for mission, and I am grateful to see it used for the work of God.”
Throughout the weekend, the van became a true vessel of ministry, making multiple trips between Pennsylvania and Maryland. It even transported members who stayed behind to attend church service on Saturday at church, demonstrating both flexibility and sacrifice. Notably, Bethel United Methodist Church relinquished the use of their van for their own Sunday service so that the Haitian SDA youth could fully participate in this life-changing spiritual experience.
One parent, Brother Casseus, whose two children are active in the clubs, expressed deep gratitude: “What a powerful testimony of Christlike love and shared purpose for the cause of God.”
Upon arrival at Pine Forge Academy, the presence of the van sparked curiosity across the campus. Many wondered about its origin, "a Methodist van on campus," until it was quickly recognized by Elder Nolet Antoine of Horeb Haitian SDA Church, who served as a security officer for the event. With joy and recognition, it became clear: this was the HBH District, moving forward by faith and by God’s provision.
For the Hagerstown Haitian SDA community, this van has become far more than a means of transportation; it is a symbol of God’s faithfulness. It has already been used to support multiple church activities, enabling members, youth, and families to participate in life-changing spiritual events.
Reflecting on the experience, Pastor Dr. Brian Ladiny declared: “This was truly an answer to prayer. We were deeply concerned about how we would afford to rent two vans, but God made a way where there seemed to be no way.”
Pastor Tabuanka Jean and Elder John B. Antoine, who served as chaperones for both clubs during the trip, echoed this sentiment with gratitude, affirming that the provision of the van made it possible for the Pathfinders and Adventurers to attend and be blessed.
The youth themselves were filled with joy and appreciation, expressing heartfelt thanks to Rev. Jim and Bethel United Methodist Church for their generosity and love.
Indeed, this story reminds us that when God’s people come together in mission, barriers are broken, needs are met, and miracles happen.
“To God be the glory, great things He has done!”
