New Joy Fellowship Opens the Conversation on Mental Health

The Adventist Youth Department of New Joy Fellowship SDA Church in Hagerstown, MD  held a meaningful, educational program on Sabbath, August 22, 2026, focused on mental health.

We were blessed to have Dr. Denise Parsons, a member of our church and a Doctor of Psychology, as our guest presenter. Dr. Parsons provided a professional, informative overview of mental health, including several types of mental health disorders and their effects on individuals and families. A central spiritual message of the presentation was the reminder that all knowledge comes from God. Dr. Parsons explained that we live in a world affected by sin and corruption, and that many mental health challenges are part of the brokenness experienced by humanity. She encouraged members to remember their humanity and to extend compassion, patience, understanding, and grace to those experiencing mental health concerns.

The program also included a question-and-answer session. Members shared personal experiences involving loved ones and others affected by mental health challenges. Some participants also spoke about personal trauma and the  effects it has had on their lives. This created a supportive environment for learning, reflection, and encouragement.

The presentation was extremely professional, informative, and spiritually edifying for the members. The congregation expressed appreciation for Dr. Parsons’ willingness to share her knowledge and expertise. Many members are looking forward to Part 2 of the presentation, in which Dr. Parsons plans to discuss personality disorders.
