First Millsboro Church Embraces Native American Heritage Month

The history of the First Millsboro Church in Millsboro, DE is deeply connected to the heritage of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, located just 1.5 miles from the church.

Throughout the month of November, the Native American Ministry presented a special heritage display in the church foyer. This exhibit featured articles, historical information, and handcrafted beaded items created by members of the Nanticoke Tribe.

The current Chief of the Nanticoke Tribe, Chief Avery Johnson, has served since 2023. He follows former Chief Natosha Norwood Carmine, who made history as the first female Chief, leading the tribe from 2016 to 2023.

Today, the Nanticoke Tribe has a membership of approximately 550 individuals nationwide. Their strong lineage is reflected in their tribal registry, which highlights several longstanding family names, including Harmon, Jackson, Norwood, Street, Wright, Johnson, Drain, Coursey, and Clark (Delaware Today – 11/15/2017).

The Nanticoke Indian Ministry of First Millsboro Church remains actively engaged with the Tribe through a variety of programs and initiatives each year. These include joint church services, genealogy and historical research collaborations, and participation in the Tribe’s largest annual event—the Nanticoke Pow Wow, held during the second weekend of September.

In its early years, the First Millsboro Church congregation included members who were formerly part of other Christian denominations before becoming Seventh-day Adventists. Today, the church continues to honor the rich cultural roots that helped shape its identity.

Heritage remains a cherished part of who we are at First Millsboro Church—a reminder of the diverse lineage that brings us together as God’s children.

“Wynishiwa” — “Thank you” — for sharing in our heritage.
