Hampton Church Partners to Empower Youth and Families for Summer

As the City of Hampton continues to navigate growing concerns around youth engagement—including unsupervised “takeover” gatherings during school breaks—New Life Church in Hampton, in collaboration with the Community Outreach Coalition, offered a proactive and empowering alternative on a recent Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Together, they hosted the Hampton Youth Summer Job Prep Event, a free initiative designed to equip and uplift young people ages 16–24 with the tools, exposure, and support needed to make positive, productive choices during their time off while earning an income. Topics included resume development, interview preparation, conflict resolution, communication skills, and other valuable workforce readiness training.

The event brought together youth from across Hampton and the greater Tidewater region for a dynamic experience centered on career readiness, personal development, and meaningful connection. Through guided conversations, mentorship, and practical instruction, participants gained insight into employment opportunities while building confidence and a stronger sense of direction.

At a time when many communities are asking how to create safer and more constructive environments for young people, this event demonstrated that intentional investment can help shape positive outcomes. “This was more than just an event—it was a statement. Young people don't just need supervision; they need opportunities, guidance, and spaces where they feel valued. When those elements are present, behavior often follows environment.”

The impact extended beyond the program itself. In recognition of the financial pressures facing many families, organizers distributed more than $500 in gift cards, along with free groceries and clothing to attendees. The gesture reinforced a simple but powerful message: this community sees, values, and supports its people.

By combining youth empowerment with tangible community care, the initiative addressed one of the city's most pressing challenges—how to engage teens and young adults in ways that are both constructive and transformative.

New Life SDA Church and its partners remain committed to expanding these efforts, working alongside city leaders, community organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders to create consistent opportunities that strengthen young people, support families, and build a brighter future for Hampton.
