President Kinlock Brings Hope and Solidarity to Haitians in the HBH Maryland District
Sabbath, August 29, was a memorable day of worship, encouragement, and fellowship at Horeb Haitian Seventh-day Adventist Church, the College Park Campus of the HBH-Maryland District, as the congregation welcomed Dr. Trevor Kinlock, President of the Allegheny East Conference, First Lady Carleen Kinlock, and their family.
More than an official visit, President Kinlock’s presence demonstrated leadership through compassion, connection, and personal engagement. At a time when many Haitian families are facing uncertainty, financial pressure, immigration concerns, and fear about the future, his visit reassured the community that they are valued and supported by their Conference.
Dr. Kinlock delivered a powerful and timely sermon that brought hope and spiritual encouragement to the congregation. His message reminded worshipers that difficult circumstances do not cancel God’s promises and that faith can remain strong even during uncertain times.
Reflecting on the president’s visit and fellowship, Dr. Brian Ladiny, pastor of the HBH-Maryland District, stated, “Leadership is not simply exercised from an office; it is demonstrated by showing up, listening, worshiping, praying, and standing alongside people in their moments of vulnerability.”
During a special recognition, President Kinlock received a map of Haiti as a cultural gift and as an invitation to one day visit the country. First Lady Carleen Kinlock was honored with flowers and a special presentation from the HBH District Hair Ministries, while the Kinlock children were also recognized for supporting their parents in ministry.
Following the worship service, the Kinlock family joined church members for fellowship and a traditional Haitian meal. The afternoon was filled with conversation, laughter, photographs, and warm hospitality. Elder Dr. Wadson Périclès proudly described the meal as having been prepared by “some of the finest Haitian cooks in the Washington metropolitan area.”
As the “mothership” congregation of the HBH-Maryland District, which also includes Bethanie and the Hagerstown Haitian Group, Horeb continues to play an important role in the district. Although the congregation does not yet have a permanent place of worship of its own, members were grateful for a visit that strengthened the connection between the local church and Conference leadership.
Mr. President and First Lady Carleen, thank you for worshiping and fellowshipping with us. We look forward to welcoming the Kinlock family again.
