Southwest Philly Church Hosts Tenant Workshop for Community Residents
TURN, the Tenant Union Representative Network, is turning confusing, complicated housing issues into manageable solutions for Philadelphia residents. During a recent workshop hosted by Jevan West and Jax Hebner at the Southwest Philadelphia SDA Church, resident Riquan King summed it up best: “I love that I was able to attend this workshop. The information you gave me is very helpful! I can truly say that it’s invaluable and I can use it.”
That sentiment wasn’t just a compliment. It was a declaration of empowerment. The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including the following: landlord disputes, rent assistance, utility and bill payment resources, repair requests, unsafe housing conditions, eviction notices, and other tenant rights.
Philadelphia has long struggled with housing instability, aging buildings, and landlord disputes. TURN’s mission is to close the gap between what tenants experience and what tenants deserve. Mr. King left the workshop feeling empowered. What he took away will have a ripple effect through his community. Stronger tenants mean stronger neighborhoods and stronger neighborhoods will lead to a stronger Philadelphia. Pastor Timothy Lee was excited to have participated in this endeavor to help build a stronger Southwest Philadelphia community.
